planet location telescope
Best Star chart for objects visible with a 6″ dob?

Was looking for a decent – reasonably priced star chart that contains the objects I will be able to see with this telescope. The only reason I am putting a limit on the objects is for the ease of reading, If you know of a good one that contains more than I would be able to see it is fine as long as it is easily readable. I am located in MD, in the US if it has to be based on location. I currently have a Stars and planets book but would like something a little more field friendly. Thank you.

What you want to do is set the chart to the limiting magnitude for your scope AND location.

http://www.celestron.com/c3/support3/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=1644

So for your scope, the best it can do is magnitude 13.6. For your location (light pollution, age and so on), a more realistic figure might be closer to 10 to 12.

For star charts, here’s a list of freeware and up -

http://astro.nineplanets.org/astrosoftware.html

I’ve used Cartes du Ciel before and it works well for its free price. It’ll let you set limiting magnitude, field of view for a given telescope – eyepiece combination and do printable charts for field use.

The program that I use the most is SKyTools -

http://www.skyhound.com/

Which for some folks is awkward to use because of its nonstandard interface. However, once you learn how the program works, it is a very powerful tool for setting up observing lists, observing locations, logs and so on. However the price is also a little steep – $100 for the basic package to $180 for the pro package (which is the one I have)

Hubble Space Telescope 1/48 Replica

The Hubble Space Telescope Model in 1/48 Scale. The Hubble Space Telescope is a telescope in orbit around the Earth, named after astronomer Edwin Hubble. Its position outside the Earth’s atmosphere provides significant advantages over ground-based telescopes ? images are not blurred by the atmosphere, there is no background from light scattered by the air, and the Hubble can observe ultra-violet light that is normally absorbed by the ozone layer in observations made from Earth. Since its launch in 1990, it has become one of the most important instruments in the history of astronomy. With it, astronomers have made many observations leading to breakthroughs in astrophysics. Hubble’s Ultra Deep Field is the most sensitive astronomical optical image ever taken.
