Choosing the Ideal High Powered Binoculars

There are just too many different kinds of binoculars being released in the market today. Because of their wide efficacy in various fields, several types of binoculars have been created to fit a specific user. Because of this, deciding which one to buy can be a complicated task. However, if one understands what he should look for in a binocular and what each specification means, it will help narrow the choices down. It is also important to be clear on what the binocular will be used for. High powered binoculars can be used in bird watching, camp outs, navigation, military, etc. Hunting binoculars are also high-powered ones that are often used by hunters when they go out in the woods. No matter what field it will be used for, it is important to understand what to consider before buying one.

How to Choose

When choosing binoculars, knowing how to interpret what the specifications mean is crucial. First, one must understand how a binocular identification is read. It often comes in a format of two numbers such as 7×35. The first number is its magnification power while the second one is the diameter of its objective lens. The magnification power pertains to how many times closer an image will appear using the binocular while the diameter of the objective lens refers to the amount of light your binocular can gather, in millimeters. The larger the diameter, the more light it gathers which gives a brighter view of the objective. Therefore, hunting binoculars with a 7×35 binocular identification means that it will show the target image to be 7 times closer in objective lenses of 35mm diameter.

The numbers in a binocular identification can be used to further determine its specifications. High powered binoculars are also classified through their exit pupil and their relative brightness. The exit pupil refers to the brightness of the target images in a low-light setting. It is related to how wide our pupils widen in the dim. It is derived from dividing the objective lens diameter by the magnification power.

On the other hand, relative brightness is the square of the exit pupil. This refers to how bright the objects will be as seen by our eyes. The higher the relative brightness, the brighter the images will be. This means that the same hunting binoculars earlier will reflect targets in dark light as how they would be seen by a pupil that has widened by 5mm. They have a relative brightness of 25.

Another specification to consider when choosing high powered binoculars is the eye relief. This refers to the distance of the eyes and the binocular eyepieces that allows one to see the entire surroundings’ view. It adds convenience by allowing one to hold the binoculars farther from the face, especially if one is wearing eyeglasses. The greater the eye relief is, the more convenient it is. When choosing hunting binoculars, the ideal eye relief for those with eyeglasses is 11mm or more.

Because of the many kinds of binoculars available in the market nowadays, it is important to understand how one should choose among high powered binoculars according to their specifications. With the things mentioned above, buying the ideal binoculars will be a lot easier than before.
