Lunar Rover on the Moon.?
A recent edition of Top Gear ran a feature on the Lunar Rover, AKA, “The Moon Buggy” used by Astronauts to drive over the Moon to collect rock samples, The Moon Buggy was left on the surface of the Moon when the last manned mission to the Moon returned to Earth as obviously it couldn’t be brought back. Now my question is this,as technology has vastly advanced hugely since those days, including telescope technology, would it be possible today to see that car on the surface of the moon from down here on Earth
Well, …, not from the Earth. Even Hubble cannot resolve and object that tiny. Think of it in reverse … you’re on the moon looking for a blue life raft 50 miles off the cost of Hawaii. Hawaii is relatively imperceptible from the moon but you could find it with a telescope and then point the scope 50 miles off the coast of Hawaii yet your scope would be able to resolve the blue life raft.
Now a satellite with a decent scope and camera traveling overhead would be able to resolve such an image and that’s exactly what we have in the photo link below. Still not the Lunar rover (again it’s just to small) but we do see Astronaut footpaths, experiment packages, and the LEM decent module bases.
