good astrophotography telescope?
I have a 10″ dobsonian telescope with no EQ mount. I also have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel DSLR camera (not modified) with an adapter to a telescope 1.25″ and 2″. I am looking to get a nice 10″ telescope with a focal length of about 1750-2000mm. I want a great tracking tripod that I can get 10-15 min exposures. I will be able to get a job next year so I don’t have a major income to help feed my obsession with space. What I’m trying to say, is that I need a telescope at around $2000. Feel free to tell me about others that are more though. Also feel free to tell me about any 12 inch telescopes as long as they are all on a tripod tracking mount.
Thanks!
Well, …, in your case I’d why don’t you by a really good high end banded equatorial mount (e.g. losmndy or vixen) and use your 10″ OTA. The mount is really the critical component to astrophotography. A 10″ Meade LX200-ACT will cost you $3500, then you’ll need the $400 supper wedge, and a ~$400 autoguider to guide the scope (not to mention adapter rings and such for your camera). That’s roughly ~$4,300. Also you need to consider weight of the scope the LX200-ACF (when fully assembled) weighs ~120lb. You may also need to attach a set counter balance weights to the scope (of course that will be extra). So, IMHO, you should maximize you current investment by just buying the high end mount. BTW you’ll still need the autoguider.

1.25 Orion Universal Camera Adapter $36.99 The 1.25″ Universal Camera Adapter allows attachment of a camera body to reflector and refractor telescopes for either prime-focus or eyepiece-projection photography (hence the term universal). The adapter slides into the eyepiece holder as an eyepiece normally would. This universal adapter is composed of two detachable parts: a prime-focus adapter (or T-adapter) for prime-focus photography, and a fixed-length or variable extension tube for eyepiece-projection photography. A thumbscrew in the extension tube holds the telescope eyepiece in place. This combination of prime-focus and eyepiece-projection camera adapter has a non-variable barrel design that allows a fixed projection distance for eyepiece-projection photography. Fits reflector and refractor telescopes with 1.25″ telescope eyepiece holders. This Standard Universal Camera Adapter is precision made of black-anodized aluminum and is compatible with 1.25″ telescope focusers and many 1.25″ telescope eyepieces (some eyepieces have housing diameters that are too large to fit inside the adapter). The barrel of the adapter is threaded for filters. A T-ring for your specific camera model (sold separately) is required to couple your camera body to the universal adapter. |

1.25 Orion Variable Universal Camera Adapter $52.99 The 1.25″ Variable Universal Camera Adapters allow attachment of a camera body to reflector and refractor telescopes for either prime-focus or telescope eyepiece-projection photography (hence the term universal). This combination of prime-focus and eyepiece-projection camera adapter has a sliding barrel design that allows variable projection distances. This allows for slight changes in magnification without swapping telescope eyepieces when performing eyepiece-projection photography. Fits reflector and refractor telescopes with 1.25″ eyepiece holders. This Variable-Power Universal Camera Adapter is precision made of black-anodized aluminum and is compatible with 1.25″ telescope focusers and many 1.25″ telescope eyepieces (some eyepieces have housing diameters that are too large to fit inside the adapter). The barrel of the adapter is threaded for filters. A T-ring for your specific camera model (sold separately) is required to couple your camera body to the universal adapter. |

Orion 2 to 1.25 Precision Centering Adapter $34.99 This clever adapter precisely centers any 1.25″ accessory in a 2″ focuser. Whereas standard 1.25″ adapters use a thumbscrew, which pushes an inserted barrel laterally, i.e., off center, the Centering Adapter employs a helical compression mechanism that precisely centers the accessory as it is tightened in place. This adapter is especially useful with reflector telescopes for critical centering of a collimating device. It’s also ideal for centering eyepieces and imaging cameras on the center axis of a telescope’s light path. Made of machined, anodized aluminum, with a knurled twist-lock ring. Barrel is threaded for 2″ filters. |
